Learn the best way to juice ginger and turmeric with the Kuvings AUTO10 Plus for a smooth, clog-free experience!
1. Juice Fresh
Just like with all juicing ingredients, fresh is best!
Ginger and turmeric are naturally fibrous and become drier and fibrous as they age. This makes older roots more difficult to juice.
Air exposure is one of the reasons why roots shrivel and soften quickly, especially sliced roots.
Store roots in airtight containers in the refrigerator to decrease their exposure to air. You can also wrap them in cling wrap or a paper towel before placing them in the airtight container.
In addition to freshness, when selecting roots for juicing, go for plump and heavy roots. These traits indicate that they are juicy, making them easier to juice.
2. Whole vs. Chopped
For small amounts of ginger and turmeric, you don’t need to chop them. This would be if you add an inch or two of a root to your recipe for a little kick.
For larger amounts of ginger, we recommend chopping them into 1-inch to 2-inch pieces for easier and faster processing.
Here is a pro tip: Cut your ginger horizontally to break up its vertical fibers. In other words, cut in the same direction as the lines on the peel. You’ll notice that cutting this way requires more effort as you’re trying to separate the tightly packed fibers.
Turmeric is smaller and less fibrous compared to ginger, so chopping it is unnecessary. However, if you have issues with juicing turmeric, you can cut it using the same method as ginger.
3. To Peel or Not to Peel?
Good news! You don’t need to peel your ginger and turmeric!
In fact, there are many reasons why it's better to leave the peels on. Here are some benefits to juicing ginger and turmeric peels:
- The peels contain polyphenols, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties.
- You save time and effort as rooted vegetables are hard to peel because of their odd shapes and crevices.
- The thin peels don't damage the juicer or contribute to clogging.
- The peels can help indicate which direction to chop.
- Turmeric peels protect your hands from stains.
If you want to remove the peels from your ginger, skip the peeler and use a spoon to scrape the skin off. It's a great tool to get into those crevices without wasting the pulp.
You can use a regular vegetable peeler to peel turmeric and a spoon for any hard-to-reach spots. To avoid staining your hands, consider wearing gloves when handling turmeric.
4. Juice Turmeric with Lemon
Turmeric can stain your juicer, leaving behind an orange/yellow color on most of the parts and a green/blue color on the screw.
Staining occurs because the curcumin in turmeric is not easily soluble in water.
The best way to avoid staining your juicer is to juice turmeric with lemon. Lemon is acidic, and its juice naturally bleaches stains.
5. Layering Ingredients
When juicing ginger and turmeric, we recommend layering them at the bottom of the hopper.
Place larger, harder ingredients at the top. These ingredients provide added pressure to push ginger and turmeric fibers through the juicer, helping to prevent clogging.
6. Use the Reverse Button
Make use of the reverse button! The reverse button sends pieces back up and loosens any lodged pieces.
Hold down the reverse button for 5-10 seconds, and then press the forward button. You can do this multiple times.
This process can help unclog your juicer without requiring you to disassemble and clean it out mid-session.
7. Cleaning Your Juicer
While it's tempting, don't clean your juicer in the dishwasher. High heat can warp the parts.
Not only should you wash your juicer by hand, but you should do it immediately after use. The sooner you wash your juicer, the easier it is to remove pulp residue and stains.
To help remove stains, you can create a paste or liquid solution of cleaning agents. Some helpful agents are dish detergent, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and water. Let the parts sit or soak in the paste or solution for a few hours or overnight.
For the screw, you can pour a little bit of vegetable oil onto a paper towel and rub it onto the stained parts.
Be sure to wash off any residue from the parts with dish detergent and water to complete cleaning.
